Drama kicked off in October 1997 with “KAMIYACHO SAKURA HOTEL”, a new work by Hisashi Inoue. The director was Hiroko Watanabe, Artistic Director at the time. The story had originally been to stage the twists and turns before opening a theatre but while the concept was being developed, another idea caught on – that of “opening the New National Theatre on the foundations of thespians who fell victim to the war”.
