Sandburg's inscription on an unopened New York Sunday Times: 'NY (Sunday) Times, Aug 7, '49, nobody opens, everybody sees, nobody cares, a newspaper not demonstrably stupid yet incorrigibly stodgy.' Sandburg, forever a journalist, maintained dozens of subscriptions to newspapers over the years, following a story and how it was viewed all over the country. Independent thought and critical thinking skills were traits Sandburg admired and promoted. Never going to only one source for information, he often had book shelves lined with resources about a given topic.
