Religious pendants were widely worn in Catholic Spain. They were often acquired as souvenirs at the numerous pilgrimage sites, and were used as amulets against all the dangers of daily life as much as aids to prayer. They were worn hanging from necklaces or rosaries. This pendant shows the image of the Virgin of the Sagrario, the patron saint of Toledo. She can be recognised by the imperial crown which she wears, presented to the shrine in the late 16th century.
