Nicholas Spicer, merchant and Mayor of Exeter

Nicholas Spicer was a merchant and freeman of Exeter who held the office of Mayor in
1603-1604, 1629-1630 and 1644-1645. This painting with its symbols and inscriptions of death belongs to a group known as “memento mori” portraits.
