Nicholson House was built by John Laing PLC's Easter Region division for Southend-on-Sea Borough Council. Work began in May 1997. The block comprises 96 units of sheltered accommodation and three warden's flats. The second phase of the project was a block of 107 flats known as Barringtons, on which work began in June 1988. Both blocks were completed in 1990.
