Nicky Wood, from Merewether in NSW, was a teenage prodigy surfer in the 1980s, the godson of Australia’s four-time world champion Mark Richards. At 16 Nicky won the 1987 Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, still the youngest ever winner of a pro world championship competition. This board was made for Nicky when he was 12 by Geoff McCoy, arguably Australia’s most successful boardmaker of the 1970s and early ‘80s. The board features all the prominent McCoy design elements from the era with a single fin, narrow nose and wide point well back. Quite progressive boards for the time, they vied with but were ultimately superseded by the three-fin Thruster design.
