Gillian says: "Following Nancy's Instragram posts, I was struck by how physically gruelling her work on the Covid ICU ward work was, with frequent periods of long nightshifts, trapped in full PPE. And that's on top of the emotional toll of working with so many critically ill and dying patients. We agreed to try to capture this as a commemoration of her time in Intensive Care. But I think this portait is not just about Nancy's exhaustion - her compassion is still so apparent through her tiredness, giving a strong sense of her tender patience and care. I have been so moved painting Nancy and humbled by her dedication - a true hero."
Nancy says: "I am usually the Senior Sister in ENT Outpatients at the Royal London Hospital, but with a background in critical care and anaesthetics I was redeployed in Intensive Care for three months while the pandemic was at its peak. My strongest memory of that time will be the overwhelming and relentless exhaustion, so I'm really pleased that Gillian has captured this so beautifully in the portrait. I absolutely love it - and it is wonderful to have such a personal record of my part in this strange situation."
