Nijo-jo Palace, Kyoto. This building has "nightingale" (squeaky) verandah floors to alert residents to intruders, and is thought to have been the residence of Prince Genji of Murasaki Shikibu's novel *The Tale of Genji,*written in the early years of the 11th century.
