- Story: SEPTEMBER 1997 EAST LONDON The photograph was taken on the occasion of then President Nelson Mandela’s visit to Ginsberg in September 1997 as part of the 20th Anniversary Commemoration of the death in detention of Bantu Stephen Biko. During the commemorative activities, President Mandela unveiled the Biko Statue in Oxford Street, East London, and declared the Biko family home in Ginsberg Township a National Heritage Site, (afterwards known as the Biko Monument) before stopping at the grave of Bantu Stephen Biko to pay his respects. The picture was taken at the graveside. From left to right; Samora Biko, Nkosinathi Biko (Steve Biko’s sons), President Mandela, Mrs Nontsikelelo Biko (Steve Biko’s widow), Ms Nobandile Biko (Steve Biko’s sister) and Khaya Biko (Steve Biko’s brother).
