British Schoolc.1777

Dulwich Picture Gallery

Dulwich Picture Gallery
London, United Kingdom

For the sitter, see Northcote DPG28. DPG503 was reproduced in (or may rather derive from) a mezzotint by I.T. or J.T. after a drawing by Gruin or Gwin. The bust is identified in the engraving as Fénélon, whose reputation Desenfans defended in 1777 against an attack by Lord Chesterfield. The mezzotint omits various features, including the lily, putto, fountain and arbour.
