In the Noh drama “Shakkyo”, Shishi or a lion-like holy animal rejoices over the everlasting peace, dancing dynamically amidst peonies in full bloom. The Shishi-guchi mask is used exclusively for the play. The facial expression is suggestive of Shishi, the king of animals, which awe other animals with its roar.
