Noh mask Uba

Unknown17th century, Edo period

Tachibana Museum

Tachibana Museum
Fukuoka-ken, Japan

Uba represents a refined old woman. The downcast eyes, which are completely hollowed out, are the main feature of the mask. Though there are fine wrinkles on the forehead and brows, and the cheeks are somewhat sunken in, the overall impression of the mask is gentle and graceful. The backside of the mask is finished with a wiped lacquer coating in brown.
