The sheer fabric on the front of this banner is printed with anti-feminist quotes and posters. These have then been slashed through with a cross, representing the act of voting and paying homage to Suffragettes, who slashed paintings to publicise their cause.

Underneath is a message of solidarity from the group to women who are unable to vote. Each letter is embroidered with abstract images representing women who can’t vote because of the laws of their native country, or because they are homeless, imprisoned, or refugees. On the reverse of the banner are embroidered hidden inspirational messages, representing the messages Suffragettes left for each other on the walls of their prison cells.

“I really liked coming together to make something with other women celebrating women's rights”

“I enjoyed being part of a diverse group of women working towards a political artwork.”

Norfolk & Norwich Festival's vision is to use the power of the arts to make our part of the world a truly great place to live, work, learn and play. They collaborate year-round with extraordinary artists – some from the region, some from the other side of the world – and with communities across Norfolk and Norwich to create unmissable experiences that have the potential to change lives.
