Around 1000 A.D., 60-90 Greenland Norse braved the North Atlantic, arriving by water at the northern tip of Newfoundland’s Great Northern Peninsula. Historians believe that for 10-20 years they spent winter at this base camp and explored the region they named “Vinland.”

A map of Greenland and Eastern Canada showing the likely route of the Greenland Norse from Brattahlid to Vinland.
