The Lewis Family Papers largely concerns an African American family from Raleigh, N.C. J. D. Lewis and his family moved there when he took the district manager position for the North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Co., an African American life insurance company in Durham, founded in 1898. He also worked for Capital Broadcasting Company in the 1950s and 1960s.
