Formerly a gasworks, torpedo factory and submarine base, Sub Base Platypus is an emerging public domain on the foreshore of North Sydney, homeland of the Cammeraygal People. The Harbour Trust envisions Sub Base Platypus as community hub where historic spaces are revealed, reimagined and activated by a range of cultural, recreational and commercial uses.

Note underneath photograph: The North Shore Gas Works at Neutral Bay in about 1884 soon after the company, founded in 1876 by J.W. Fell & Charles Watt, was incorporated as a public concern. The Retort House, on the right, was built on a reclamation of the shoreline & the rugged cliffs left almost in their natural state. The land occupied by the boathouse was later acquired by the company.
