Northeastern Rafts

Candido Portinari1939

Projeto Portinari

Projeto Portinari
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Composition in black and white. Well-defined contour lines. Composition representing a raft with three figures and two smaller at the bottom, one on each side. The first raft consists of interconnected boards; on it, a man standing in profile to the right, suggested only by the outline; he's on the right arm stretched forward, toward the spinnaker. On the right, bent woman in profile to the left, removing something from the sea, which is suggested by sinuous lines to the right of the composition; more to the right, a basket and a stool. Behind them, man standing in front, wearing hat. In the background, on the left, small raft without sail, diagonally, with woman lying on it. To the right, another small raft with candle and woman standing in front, with the head turned to the left.
