A Sami man sitting outside on a wooden box. This print is part of "Atlas Historique et Pittoresque", published in 1842-1852 for "Voyages de la Commission Scientifique du Nord" about the French scientific expedition La Recherche (1838–1840).

In the background we can see a woman with a child, a boat and a fjord so this is possibly a coastal Sami family. The man is wearing traditional Sami clothing, leather beak shoes with traditional bands, a "pesk", which is a reindeer fur overcoat and underneath we can see the traditional Sami costume that was worn as everyday clothing until the early '80s. The traditional clothing has now become the Sami national costume and is now worn to more festive occasions, but we can occasionally still see it still worn in everyday situations like reindeer herding.

The woman and the child are also wearing traditional clothing. The woman is wearing the "horn hat" that was named the devil's horn by the pietistic Laestadians and the tradition was almost eradicated.
