The focal point is a naked female body seen from the back with the frontal view hidden to the viewer. However, it is evident that she is reading a newspaper. Female body is a constant in Renato Guttuso’s work, from his early to his late years. The artist spies it, observes and investigates it: at times dressed, at times naked, sitting or lying down, provocative or subdued. In this painting executed with a dry and impetuous brushwork, where the painter also employs the collage technique, a physical and intellectual sensuality shines through.
