Seo, Jindal(pen name: Dopung, 1908-1947) went to Japan in 1930 and studied painting at art research center for three years. In 1940, he graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts(東京美術学校). When returning home, he worked as the teacher in Daegu and Manchuria, and after the liberation from Japan in 1945, he established the research center of art in Busan, Korea. His works were awarded at Joseon Art Exhibition seven times from 1931.
While Seo was in Tokyo School of Fine Arts, he studied Academism and Impressionism under Kobayashi, Mango(小林萬吾, 1870-1947), and especially showed remarkable talent in nude painting. Seo’s artistic style, including brushstrokes and use of colors, shows the influence of Paul Cézanne(1839-1906), the Post-Impressionist.
Reflecting Seo’s adoption of Academism and Impressionism, this work depicts the nude woman who has glamorous body. In the right side of the screen, the signature, “So, Eseo(小, 二徐),” reveals that he painted this work at the class of Kobayashi when he was the second year of the school. Brown is colored overall, and the light and shade are strongly contrasted. he used tough and bold brushstrokes, and highlighted the subject, woman, by simplifying the background.
