Behind Gargamelle, discreetly tucked away from view, is NUE, the spark chamber annexe which has been added to the bubble chamber. Its purpose is to continue research into neutral leptonic currents which have so much been discussed since their discovery at CERN in 1973. NUE (short for neutrino-electron reactions) comprises 150 optical spark chambers 2 x 2m² extending over 8 m built up inside the new camera building. This spark chamber array is an experiment by an Aachen/Padua collaboration at CERN which studied neutrino-electron scattering. A small unexplained effect was seen which appears to have shown up again in a new experiment at the Swiss SIN Laboratory.
