Nutmeg is an endemic spice typical of Banda Island, Maluku. Its production area includes Sulawesi, Papua and Aceh. Indonesia contributes 70 to 75% of the world's nutmeg supplies. Today, nutmeg is grown in various regions in Southeast Asia, South India, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, the Caribbean, and Grenada. Nutmeg is one of the most hunted spices, and was also a major pioneer of maritime trade that lasted from the 16th century. It all started with the Portuguese who first discovered nutmeg in a closed and secretive trading community, located in Banda and Ambon. Nutmeg and mace have a distinctive sweet aroma, dominated by a slightly spicy and bitter taste.
