Calliope (muse of eloquence and heroic poetry. Distinctive signs: stiletto). She was the mother of Orpheus and Homer (the greatest Greek poet who lived around the VIIIth century B.C. and wrote the Iliad on the war between the Greeks and the Trojans and the Odyssey on the adventures of Odysseus and his friends). Canova would have someone read to him Homer’s, Polybius’ and Tacitus’ works in his Roman Studio as a source of inspiration for his sculptures.
