A preparatory sketch in oil on panel, with swift assertive brushstrokes on a thin and delicately applied ground through which the grain of the wood can be seen, exploiting and exalting the natural beauty of the support. The iconography is still the subject of dispute. The painting was donated to the Accademia di San Luca by Domenico Pellegrini.
