Dear Madame Rubinstein:
Mr. Josias Leao has told us of the enthusiastic cooperation you are giving to make possible publication of The Life and Art of Portinari. We believe that you will be interested in knowing that plans are progressing satisfactorily. A beautiful book has been designed. It will 8-3/4 x 11-1/4 inches, bound in blue buckram. It is planned to include one hundred reproductions of Portinari’s work, of which eight will be in full color. The entire work will b reproduced by the deep-etch process.
Mr. Leao has informed us that you have given full consent and approval for the reproduction in this volume of the following paintings, publishing rights for which are owned by you, and that you do not expect any royalties or other compensation from the sale of the work:
Coffee carriers, oil
Composition with figures, tempera
Three Women and a boy, oil
Portrait of Helena Rubinstein, Princess Gourielli Girl, oil
Still Life
Composition, oil
Head of a young girl
Fisherman
Mr. Leao tells us further that you are loaning to him the following three original paintings (receipt of which has already been acknowledge by Miss Mary D. Alexander of our staff) which, as now planned, will be reproduced in full color:
Coffee carriers
Composition with figures, oil
Composition, two figures, tempera
It is our understanding that you loan the paintings to him for us by us in making reproductions and that you and/or he are assuming the entire responsibility for the expense of packing, and shipping the pictures and of insuring them while in transit and in our hands or those of our printers, and that you exempt the University, of which we are a department, of all responsibility as relates to safe care and return of the paintings.
The University asks that for purposes of record we have a statement to that effect in our files. To that end I am sending this letter in duplicate. If it correctly summarizes your understanding of the conditions under which you permit the reproduction of the paintings owned by you in this volume and the loan of the originals, will you please indicate your acceptance on the original and return it to us. The other copy is for your files.
Sincerely yours,
THE UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO PRESS
