Photograph shows the exterior of the main building and the surrounding grounds of Oak Hill, home James Monroe (1758-1831), fifth President of the United States. Constructed between 1820 and 1823, Monroe lived here following his presidency until 1830. The design stems from the ideas of both Thomas Jefferson and James Hoban, architect of the White House.
