Obalufon II

Casted in copper, this life-size, effigy mask is named after the 48th Ooni of Ife – Obalufon II – who was famous for restoring peace and prosperity to the kingdom after its collapse from violent (religious and political) conflicts and a devastating civil war between the devotees of Obatala and Odudua in ancient Ife. The reconciliation of both feuding parties was essential in laying the foundation for his historic achievements including the creation of a new city plan with a high-walled palace at its center, the construction of temples of worship in honor of both feuding parties among others, as a ruler. Obalufon II is also credited to have established the landmark brass casting, textile and royal regalia of the kingdom during his reign and is celebrated as a legendary ruler for his strides as a patron of the ancient arts of Ife.

According to scholars, the mask was first recorded and published by Late Oba Adesoji Aderemi in 1937 in a journal. It is praised for its beauty and extraordinary naturalism as one of the most astounding works of art from ancient Ife. Other unique features include the almond-shaped eyes, which is characteristic of Ife art; the stylization of the ears and the physiognomic expression and appeal of the face in general. Also, there are visible holes aligned around the mouth and jaw areas intended as fittings for an attached beard on the mask.
