Edo period ukiyoe often depict kimono thought to be dyed using katagami. For example, it is said that samé, toshi, and gyogi, the three “signature” komon patterns, which are all equally detailed, were used in the kamishimo garments of Edo period samurai in particular. In ukiyoe, as well as the clothes of the samurai, those of kabuki actors and townspeople are also depicted as dyed, indicating that dyed clothes were in wide use at that time.
