Ticket to view President Abraham Lincoln’s (1809-1865) body at Independence Hall in Philadelphia on April 22, 1865. Abraham Lincoln served as the 16th President of the United States until his assassination on April 14, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth. President Lincoln’s funeral procession traveled from Washington, D.C., to Springfield, Illinois. When the procession stopped in Philadelphia, members of The Union League of Philadelphia, a patriotic society founded in 1862 to support Abraham Lincoln and the Union during the American Civil War, received the President’s body at Independence Hall on April 22, before the public viewing on April 23.
