In the 1840s, German educator Friedrich Froebel developed a series of educational materials for small children called Spielgabe (“play gifts”). Gift No.3 was a 2-inch cube divided into eight equal-sized cubes, used in class to represent familiar objects; learn about sorting, counting, and math; and create designs on a grid.
