Paintings by HONG Junghee (1945- ) are ostensive, referential expressions resulted from the diverse, idiosyncratic textures generated by her adding of sawdust or crushed stones to paint. In Off Self (1990), a large-scale work made in this manner, the composition is imbued with tensions caused by the interplay among intense, primary colors and the dazzles of opulent colors are en fête. In front of one’s eyes the reddening flames of the sun are setting the sky ablaze.
