The region of Ionia consists of the coastal strip and islands of Asia Minor. It was extremely prosperous on account of its trade with territories including Egypt. Oil bottles from Ionia are frequently fashioned in surprising shapes: an elegant young woman, a warrior with a helmet, a little hedgehog, and even a seated monkey. Greeks had first seen monkeys in Egypt.
