Museo de Jaén

Museo de Jaén
Jaén, Spain

CE/DA02823. This lamp is characterised by its tall and hollow truncated cone-base, which probably fitted onto the end of a pole. The pan is lenticular in shape and the spout is spindle-shaped and wider towards the base. The neck is an inverted, truncated cone and the handle is decorated with a highly stylised rampart lion. The lion’s snout is very prominent and the teeth are well defined. The hind legs turn into a palm leaf, on which the end of the tail (now broken) must have rested. This kind of lamp was made by casting in a sand mould.
