Because Avani first started off as an offshoot of the Barefoot College in Tilonia, the first project was training women to become solar engineers. The philosophy being, when a women learns a skill, she uses it in her own community first. Though the model has worked in quite a few other countries, where Barefoot college has its operations, it hasn't quite taken off in the area as the discouragement from the community makes women reluctant to continue working after marriage.
