The Stevensons were one of the most influential political families in the region. Adlai E. Stevenson I was vice president of the United States under Grover Cleveland. Adlai II was the 31st governor of Illinois and two-time Democratic nominee for President of the United States; he also served as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations during the 1960s.
