William Mills qualified as an engineer in Sunderland, England. In 1885 he established the first Aluminium Foundryin the UK, he was a keen golfer and realised that aluminium was an ideal metal for golf club heads. The Mill's factory produced aluminium for cars and aircraft engines but his name isremembered for the Mills Bomb hand grenade used in WW1. He was awarded a knighthood in1922. This set of clubs was probably made around 1912, James Braid a champion golfer gave his name to endorse them. They wereowned by Bill Sadler of Hobart who a collegue of LenNettlefold, one of Tasmania's most successful golfers
