Painter and author George Wharton Edwards was born in Fair Haven, CT in 1859.
Edwards spent time living in Paris; New York City; Plainfield, NJ; and Greenwich, CT. He was known for his unique handling of impressionism and for his many nautical paintings.
Edwards was educated in Paris beginning in 1881. There, he studied under artists Eugene Fayen and Cancale.
He received many awards and accolades throughout his lifetime. In addition to The National Arts Club, his work appears in the collections of the Bruce Museum (Greenwich, CT); Houston Museum of Fine Arts (TX); Hispanic Society (NY); Springfield Art Museum (MO); High Museum of Art (GA); Luxembourg Museum, Paris (mural); U.S. Military Academy (West Point, mural); Museum of Arts and Sciences, Norfolk (VA); the Fogg Museum of Art, Harvard University (Cambridge, MA) and more.
He died in Greenwich, CT in 1950
