Lowry said ‘I’d stand for hours on just this spot…and scores of little kids who hadn’t had a wash for weeks would come and stand around me. And there was a niff too.’ The dwellings were built in 1893 by the Yorkshire and Lancashire Railway Company and demolished around 1970. They contained sixty properties. One end of the building was rounded, the other rectangular and a high wall ran around the top creating a roof yard.
