Elephant Bird's Egg

This is the biggest egg in the world. It’s nearly 30 cm long! An elephant bird’s egg has the same volume as seven ostrich eggs. The elephant bird itself was three metres tall. The bird probably still lived when the first Europeans occupied Madagascar. In a letter written in 1658, the first French governor of the island, De Flacourt, reported a large bird which lived in remote places where hunting was impossible. Unfortunately, De Flacourt was murdered by pirates before he could write any more about this mysterious bird.
