Mexican-born Olivia Cadaval moved to the DC area in 1968 and began collaborating with local educators, artists, and cultural workers in the 1970s. A pioneering scholar of DC’s Latino community history, she has worked as a curator at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival since 1988, bringing performers and tradition practitioners from Latin American and U.S. Latino communities to the National Mall in the summer.
