With the Royal Pavilion, Brighton's most iconic building in the background, the images of the two Suffragettes represent the battles and achievements of the past being handed over to modern women to remember, honour and continue.

For the group, the daisy chain conveys the idea of being inextricably linked to the past as well as to each other. Their message is that by working together, we will achieve equality of representation. As a community of hearing and deaf women, the group celebrates achievements gained and remember, in the ongoing campaigns for equality, their ethos that, ‘we need to Be Visible, have a duty to Be Counted, so we can Be Free’.

"What a fantastic experience! How wonderful to see deaf and hearing women working together to overcome cultural and language differences. We made really connections with each other while constructing the banner and learned a lot about each other. Our banner is a testament to what can be achieved when we work together, just as the suffragettes did all those years ago."
Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings, artist

Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings is a textiles artist and designer. Having been brought up in Sudan and the Middle East before settling in the UK, her work is a unique fusion of eastern and western influences, with strong influences of organic forms and Arabic styles. Colour is the vital ingredient in Omeima’s designs: drawing on the heat and intensity of her home in Sudan and the cooler shades of London for inspiration. Omeima employs deep, intense colours, with rich blending and layering techniques - creating work that stimulates the mind, spirit and senses.
