Kirk Conchan and the village near it have a rural romantic effect at this season of the year; some boys were tolling, or more correctly, ringing a bell for a funeral, when I passed...when I first heard the odd manner in which this bell was jingled...I really thought they were making use of the church bell, instead of a frying pan, to ring a swarm of bees into a hive.'
