STOCKHOLM, Sweden

When King Karl XII died from a forlorn bullet at the siege of the fortress Fredriksten in 1718 Sweden's financial state was in ruins after decades of war. Karl XII's sister Ulrika Eleonora was appointed regent until a "riksdag" (lawful gathering of the members of government) could be summoned. The dire situaton resulted, among many things, in emergency coinage of nominal value unrelated to the metal standard. This copper coin is supposed to represent one Daler silver coin.
