One-Half of an illuminated frontispiece with arabesque decoration

This illuminated frontispiece is all that remains of a manuscript (a collection of Arabic proverbs and sayings) made for the Timurid prince Baysunghur ibn Shah Rukh. The frontispiece would have been magnificent when new, but unfortunately most of the blue pigment—made from lapis lazuli—has washed away. Originally, the wide outer border surrounding the frontispiece would have been plain, not gold-flecked as it now is. In the original manuscript, this page would have been placed to the right of CBL Per 120.2.
