This is one illustration in the series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo," spanning 120 illustrations, which Hiroshige produced in his final years. The plum grounds were a garden located behind Kameido Tenjin Shrine. Many plum trees were planted there, including the famous "Garyûbai" (lying dragon plum). By arranging the deep black trunk and branches in a large fashion in front, the impression of the warm light enveloping the people viewing the plum blossoms in the back is emphasized, and the crimson sky and purple upward gradation brings about the wafting, fragrant scent of spring.
