武蔵の国と下総の国をつないだ両国橋は明暦の大火（1657）をきっかけにその二年後に架けられ、橋の西詰には広大な火除地が設けられていました。明和頃（1764～72）から仮設の茶店や料理屋などが軒を並べて歓楽街が形成され、大いに賑わいました。
