Aubrey’s Play series, in which she arranges and paints tableaux of plastic dollhouse furniture, similarly repeats generic images. These serializations, like Wayne Thiebaud’s paintings of candy, ice cream cones, and people at leisure, explore a lifestyle that can be empty and plastic, while Aubrey’s bright beguiling colors highlight the appeal of these privileged lives. Here we see three women, seated in folding chairs before a tennis court. We watch them from behind, as they watch the players, unseen by them as well.
