Artist Matthew Mazzotta works at the intersection of art, activism and urbanism. His work focuses on the power of the built environment to shape our relationships and experiences and highlights the need to insert artists and art-based development at the center of global revitalization efforts. Here, the artist utilized the resources of a small town in York, Alabama to create an unexpected public space from an abandoned private house. The new public park and open air theater became a center for innovation and creativity, ultimately transforming the town’s identity and equipping the local community with the confidence to take charge of their own cultural and economic development. OPEN HOUSE is a transforming theater in York, Alabama -- York, AL 2013. Built from a blighted property in York's downtown into a new public art project this is in the shape of a house, but can physically transform into a 100 seat theater.
