Orchard Street was laid out in 1716, with houses added between 1717 and 1722. This 1941 photograph shows some of the ways in which Bristol prepared itself for aerial bombing duirng the Second World War: a sign points the way to an air raid shelter, while at the far end of the street a concrete shelter is partly obscured by parked cars. Some houses have anti-blast tape on their windows and metal water stand in readyness near front doors in case of fire.
