The twisted branches of the tree in the right foreground are cut off by the edges of the canvas. Vincent van Gogh took many ideas like these cut offs from Japanese prints. Like many 19th century artists, he was inspired by Japanese art. He had a collection of Japanese woodcuts together with his brother Theo. Vincent said these made him happy and cheerful.
